Tony Lees

Tony Lees was born in 1940 in Bolton. He is self taught.

Despite no formal training he has developed impressions created by the industrial nature of the area of Lancashire in which he lived. In recent years the contrasting countryside of the Lake District and other rural areas has added further impressions.

The different environments have enabled him to appreciate the opportunities offered to develop in his work a richness of colour and texture found in the hills and valleys which contrast against hard edged 'gritty' man-made structures.

Fell walking is a great inspiration to Tony and during long walks such as the Pennine Way, Coast to Coast, West Highland Way and others, the different effects of the sun, shadows and varying weather conditions on the landscape have all contributed to his highly popular personal interpretations displayed in his work.

The occasional opportunities to add an element of abstraction in his painting, coupled with the use of varying colouring and application techniques has resulted in an artist with a highly individual style which is being appreciated more and more by people who like paintings 'with a feel'.

Tony’s paintings are now in homes as far apart as France, U.S.A., Switzerland, Canada, Germany, Spain, South Africa and Japan, in addition to the U.K.
